Guatemala’s Herbal Medicine

Guatemala’s traditional herbal medicine draws from the knowledge and practices of indigenous Mayan communities. Herbal medicine is deeply rooted in Mayan culture and continues to be an important part of healthcare in many rural areas of Guatemala.

For over 17 years Ethical Fashion Guatemala and their Partner Grow Your Own Cure have worked in harmony to offer all an introduction to herbs used in Mayan Healing including one, two, and three-day immersions for those seeking options to the poisons of western medicine.

Here are some commonly used herbs and plants in Guatemalan herbal medicine:

  1. Ruda (Rue): Ruda is believed to have various medicinal properties and is used to treat digestive issues, menstrual problems, and respiratory ailments. It is also considered to have protective and purifying qualities.
  2. Matico: Matico is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is commonly used to treat wounds, skin infections, and gastrointestinal issues.Matico
  3. Manzanilla (Chamomile): Chamomile is widely known for its calming and soothing properties. It is used to treat digestive disorders, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality.
  4. Hierba del Sapo (Sapo Plant): This plant is used for its diuretic properties and is believed to support kidney and urinary tract health. It is also used to alleviate menstrual cramps.
  5. Pasiflora (Passionflower): Passionflower is used for its calming and sedative effects. It is often used to relieve anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders.
  6. Ajenjo (Wormwood): Ajenjo is known for its digestive benefits and is used to treat indigestion, bloating, and loss of appetite. It is also believed to have antimicrobial properties.Artemisia Ajenjo
  7. Menta (Mint): Mint is used for its digestive properties and is commonly consumed as a tea to soothe an upset stomach and relieve indigestion.

It’s important to note that while Guatemala’s traditional herbal medicine has a long-standing tradition in Guatemala, it is essential to consult with qualified practitioners or herbalists who have a deep understanding of the plants, their preparation methods, and their potential interactions with other medications.

Additionally, it’s crucial to exercise caution and be aware of potential allergies, side effects, and contraindications before using any herbal remedies. If you have any specific health concerns, it’s advisable to seek professional medical advice from a healthcare provider.
