For over a week now, thousands of people in Guatemala have been blockading roads and taking to the streets in protest at attempts to undermine the president-elect’s transition to power.
What are they protesting in Guatemala?
The ministry, which functions similarly to the attorney general in other countries, raided the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on Friday for at least 20 hours to seize boxes holding tabulations from general election voting.
The country came to a halt last night at midnight. Banks, ATMs, all transportation, boats, and markets shut down. No violence; the roads are blocked, and we might close the airport tomorrow. No one can get in or out anyway.

Reaching the lake is difficult as there are only two main ways in through Panajachel, and the town is shut down.
Banks are closed and ATMs are empty due to overall country road closures. Markets are open with limited hours. Gas supplies are running short. Getting to and from the lake is difficult.
A few shuttle services have managed to mostly get tourists out, to the Airport which remains open.
Guatemala Country Closures Antigua is in a similar state, with limited travel access, Banks and ATM’s shut, Hotels, Hostels, and Restaurants are open, and transportation in and out is limited.
Entering Guatemala City is difficult do to the protests and blockage of main roads. FB is full of requests and misinformation as usual, I have suggested to many stay in place, taking the chance with late night shuttle is a risk of being turned back.
How long with this last? This has been brewing for weeks since the election and this is the result to maintain democracy in the country.
