The Tz’utujil Weaving Classes of San Juan La Laguna

Supporting the Artisans: By participating in this workshop you are helping to provide a sustainable future for the Tz’utujil Maya weavers of San Juan La Laguna.  We believe in the Fair pay of artisans, who work hard in their craft and put an incredible amount of effort into producing high quality, hand-made and environmentally-friendly products.

Who Should Attend: Beginners and experienced weavers, textile and fiber artists, knitters, textile designers, teachers, university students, anyone interested in weaving and natural dyeing techniques, and sustaining indigenous art forms using traditional methods.

Level of Experience Necessary: No weaving experience required, but this is also a great workshop for those with experience who want to look deeper into this art. You will receive individualized one-on-one instruction and guidance.

About The Experience: You will have a personal back strap loom for the weaving classes. Materials include your choice of a variety of naturally dyed cotton yarn from which you will weave a sampler textile that can be used as a wall hanging or place mat.  You will select the cotton from colors dyed with beets, hibiscus flowers, coconut shell, pericón, insects, and achiote among many others.
