Holy Week Processions Lake Atitlan 2023, is celebrated with street expressions of faith, called processions, usually organized by a “hermandad“. Traditional processions are a big focus of Holy Week festivities, which take place on Good Friday and are one of the richest cultural experiences you can enjoy.  This is a passionate sensory experience that mingles Spanish and Mayan traditions and is an event that truly represents the heart and soul of Guatemala.

The streets of Santa Catarina Palopó and San Antonio Palopó, and San Pedro La Laguna Guatemala turn into a canvas that is adorned with intricate and aromatic carpets (alfombras) of vibrant and beautiful flowers, pines, sawdust, and fruits as giant carved floats (andas) sway on the back of local men and women as small processions wind their way through the town’s streets.
