Seven Days in Guatemala Tours with a Purpose to immerse your time into the Mayan Culture

Lake Atitlán is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and is Guatemala’s most important national and international tourist attraction.

German explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt called it “the most beautiful lake in the world,” and Aldous Huxley famously wrote of it in his 1934 travel book Beyond the Mexique Bay: “Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes.

The lake is surrounded by many villages in which Maya culture is still prevalent and traditional dress is worn. The Maya people of Atitlán are predominantly Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel. During the Spanish conquest of the Americas, the Kaqchikel initially allied themselves with the invaders to defeat their historic enemies, the Tz’utujil and K’iche’ Maya but were themselves conquered and subdued when they refused to pay tribute to the Spanish.

Is Lake Atitlan expensive?

You will learn how they grow their own cotton, harvest it by hand, spin it using ancient techniques, and then use natural dyes and colorants derived from locally found plants, trees, bark, berries, leaves, roots, wood, and insects in the Lake Atitlan area.

A few of the plants that are used are coconut shell, pericón, pepper, purple basil, hibiscus flowers, and achiote, among many others.

Magical Tikal

DAY 5.

Tikal, being one of the largest Maya sites, is located in the northern Guatemalan rain forest and is often called the soul of the earth. This magical place is guaranteed to be an unforgettable adventure.

The Maya of Mesoamerica reached remarkable intellectual and artistic heights as far back as 3.114B.C. when they began the calendar still in use today. They built huge temples, pyramids, stone monuments, and made major advances in mathematics and astronomy, and hieroglyphic scripts.

But the ancient civilization collapsed 950A.D. The ancient Mayas migrated to the Guatemalan highlands. Tikal was an important center during their classic period. It is often called the soul of the earth.

This magical place is guaranteed to be a great adventure. Of the park’s 222 square miles, there are over 3,000 separate buildings that have been revealed: temples, shrines, ceremonial platforms, residences, ball courts, terraces, causeways, and plazas. The exuberant fauna and plant life are amazing.
