Weaving is a method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Other methods are knitting, crocheting, felting, and braiding or plaiting. The longitudinal threads are called the warp and the lateral threads are the weft or filling.

Production Times

Weaving a Shawl such as the example depicted in this picture can take up to a week of Weaving time using the Back Strap Loom. This time does not include the preparation of the yarns to produce this Shawl. Each Ball of yarn takes 12 hours to hand spin and 12 hours to naturally dye the yarns. No machines are used in this process.

A simple loom which has its roots in ancient civilizations consists of two sticks or bars between which the warps are stretched. One bar is attached to a fixed object, and the other to the weaver usually by means of a strap around the back.

Guatemalan Artisans produce purses, leather and cloth bags, shawls, scarves, huipiles, serapes, tablecloths, place mats, napkins, cushions, bedspreads, hammocks, based on sustainable and renewable initiatives.

About the huipil has been worn by indigenous women of the Mesoamerican region (central Mexico into Central America) of both high and low social rank since well before the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas. It remains the most common female indigenous garment still in use.

Sadly today Vintage Huipils are cut up and used for accents on Guatemala Leather Bags you will find sold on-line. The term Upcycling is used to justify destroying these cultural works of Art.

Each huipil can take up to six months to complete depending on the complexity of the patterns.

For many people, artistic talents are elusive. But for one San Juan La Laguna, Lake Atitlan family, the ability seems to be a genetic gift passed down through the generations.

Antonio Vásquez Yojcóm is a talented painter who was born and raised in San Juan La Laguna, Lake Atitlan.

After having studied with the famous artist Pedro Rafael Gonzalez Chavajay, Antonio began working on his own and eventually opened a home studio and gallery that is located a short walk from the San Juan boat docks.

The Vásquez Mendoza family lives in San Juan and is a family of extremely talented painters. The patriarch, Antonio Vásquez Yojcóm, taught his wife and children the unique and distinctive style of painting that has made their work highly sought after.

San Juan Lake Atitlan Artist Francisco Vásquez Mendoza, is the only son of Antonio Vásquez Yojcóm and Juana Mendoza Cholotío, and is a powerful painter in his own-right. The oil painting on the left is the work of Francisco.
